My sweet Tony,
Watching you grow into the kind, caring man you became was one of the greatest blessings of my life. You were such an inspiration to me. I still smile when I think about how the names “Pooka” and “Ruben” was tagged on you and your brother Jeff ~ I’m still not sure where that came from or how it fit, but somehow, you and Jeff were always two peas in a pod.
I can clearly remember the two of you riding on the plow in the garden between Mama’s house and Grandma’s house, with a mule pulling the plow. Looking back now, those really were some of the best days of your life. I can still see your big, beautiful smile as you ran, played, laughed, and enjoyed life. That smile stayed with you throughout your entire life. When you smiled, you lit up everyone around you.
When you turned 18, you moved to Sanford, North Carolina, to live with Jerry and me. We helped you get a job at the nuclear power plant, and that is where your beautiful future began. It was also where you met your bride, Angie, and eventually welcomed your beautiful daughter, Taylor, into your life.
Tony, I want you to know that I feel so blessed to have been a small part of the beautiful life you built. Taylor Your dad always talked to me about you and your babies…. He loved yall so very much—and those grandbabies were very special in his heart…He tried so hard to do the best he could for everyone he loved. He would always ask me to pray for you Taylor and the grand babies!
Tony our family gatherings became some of the greatest blessings of our lives. Those precious memories are something no one can ever take away from us. I’m going to Hold on to those moments, because I know he was happiest when his family was together.
Tony, me coming to pick you up and take you to church on Sundays was one of the grandest gifts of my final days with you. Did we know then that you didn’t have much time left? I don’t think we did. I simply enjoyed every moment of going to church with you, watching you raise your hands and praise God.
Your faith and your determination to live were such an inspiration to me. I will never forget those moments. They are forever etched in my heart.
But God saw fit to call you home. And although our hearts are broken, I have to believe that God makes no mistakes. Maybe He needed a big old teddy bear in heaven, so He chose you.
I know I will see you again one day, and when that day comes, I cannot wait to hug you and love on you again.
So Here are my words of love for you,
Tony:
Of all the special gifts in my life,
however great or small,
to have you as a nephew
was the greatest gift of all.
May the winds of love blow softly
and whisper in your ear,
“We love you and we miss you,
and we wish you were here.”
Deep in our hearts,
your life is kept—
to love, to cherish,
and never to forget.
No more tomorrows we can share,
but yesterday’s are always there.
A silent thought, a secret tear—
we will keep your memory forever near.
It broke my heart to lose you,
but you did not go alone.
A part of us went with you
the day God called you home.
A million times we needed you.
A million times we cried.
If love could have saved you,
you would have never died.
I’m sure God took your hand
and whispered, “Just close your eyes.
I’ll take care of you.
You can rest now.”
So, these are my final words to you, my sweet Nephew:
Peace out, and rest high on that mountain.
I will love you, I will miss you,
and I will carry your beautiful memory in my heart forever.
Until we meet again, I love you, Tony
Your sweet auntie Brenda
